Re: Update to the growing community. April 2022
Good Day Growers & Friends,
Spring is here and everyone is itching to get out to their patches and get plants in for the 2022 season. We are excited to announce that we are committed to bringing back all the great aspects of the Weigh Off and Festival as a live and interactive event! It was a tough 2 years, but we survived and are looking forward to October 1 & 2 2022.
We want to make sure you are aware of the information below as you plan your season:
- Firstly, and most important to you, we will be running two separate GPC (Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth) weigh-offs on Saturday and Sunday as in past years. The prize structure(s) will be similar to pre-covid with Saturday being the main event and Sunday a smaller prize package but remember BOTH are eligible for separate individual GPC statistics.
- Feature Vegetable will be Field Pumpkin NOTE: We will have the “Other” category, as promised last year, for the Mangle Wurzel and Class 2 vegetables that you want judged. Class 1 vegetables are the same for GPC and us.
- WE NEED GIANTS FOR THE FESTIVAL and are asking for your help! The public wants to feel, sit on and take pictures with the GIANTS, but we don’t want to endanger your prize specimens or have the public in the loading area. Our solution….. ask our growers to bring a smaller 300 + pumpkin/squash we can keep and place throughout the festival grounds. If you can do this, we will waive all weigh off registration fees. It’s a win/win for us both – and will make the visitor happy.
- Growers will be encouraged to visit, stick around and enjoy the growers hospitality area and festival as in previous years. It will be wonderful to visit again!
Pumpkinfest has partnered with Port Elgin Home Hardware to start a new initiative to encourage our youth and family enthusiasts to get in the garden – and “GROW WITH US”. Seed packages and info will be given free to registrants in May. The Sunday weigh off will include a specialized category for entries / registrants in this category. We are still flushing out the details – but the hope is to give all participants a small prize and recognition for growing – they will be encouraged to try a “giant”, but all vegetables and sunflowers, etc. are welcomed entries. Registrants are asked to upload at least 4 pictures of their efforts and will be invited to the growers entrance on Sunday mid-morning to be part of the action. Help us encourage them!!
**please pass the word to any youth or families you think would be interested. They don’t have to get the seeds from us but MUST register as a participant.
